Brisk,

7-Card Stud is played as pot limit in one very big house game in NYC and it is somewhat popular in Russia.
Maybe eventually it will catch on in the casinos. But I wouldn't think anytime soon.

Congrats on the 2 cashes!!!

I'm a big fan of stud too and I mentioned this in an earlier blog but I liked to ask it here too "Why isn't 7-Card Stud widely played as a pot limit game?"

I think it would help the game grow in popularity and pull some players from the NL Hold'em tables.

The great thing about poker is that one great cash or one good rush can wipe this all away.

Good luck and thanks for the honest updates.

You should consult Dwight Pilgrim. Maybe he can help you out of your rut. He's definitely the best player out there right now. Hit him up. It can't hurt.

Isn't this just a variation on rebuy tournaments? Not saying that is a bad thing, since people play poorly during rebuy stages..

Matt

glad to hear that you're focusing on the games you excel in. No point in losing money on Chinese poker. You never go on tilt and that will ultimately lead to success. I call first pic with bracelet after you win one!

Matt,
I really enjoy stud and I feel that the game would be more popular if it was played as a pot limit game. What are your thoughts on this?

I host a home game where most players are No Limit Hold'em players so when I broke out stud for the first time they didn't respond well to the limit structure, but when we play Pot Limit Stud they enjoy it a lot more.

To me no-limit and pot limit are the only way to play poker and think this is especially true in stud where you can push players off there draws and bluff easier than if the game is played with a limit.

Interesting hand!

The turn action would basically eliminate a straight in my mind against all but the trickiest of players. When you bet 10,500 into a pot with more than 31k in it on a board with two flush cards and two broadway cards, you absolutely have to expect to get raised by the (very vulnerable) wheel there, otherwise he lets his opponents draw way too cheap. When Scott flats the turn, I pretty much rule out a wheel.

I'm not entirely sure he's forced to value-bet his set of nines, or that he would fold a set of nines to your own river bet, but that's the kind of player-specific info I definitely don't have.

Good luck today, and see you soon.

Danny,

I guess I prepare by basically not 'preparing'. I try to come into each day of poker with no plan and no set strategy. I try to play each hand optimally by using all the current information I have. I do have mental notes on most of the players as the high limit community is quite small. I can't say I play tighter in any one form of poker than another. It is all situation dependent and most of the decisions are based on who my opponent is in the hand.

Matt:

How do you prepare for events like the HORSE you have done so well in? Do you have notes on the well known other players in each game? Are there some games you feel you are not strong in that you tend to play tighter?
